BREAST & CERVICAL SCREENING
Supporting wāhine and people with a cervix to access free national screening programmes, with care that is respectful, culturally safe, and whānau centred.

Breast screening
BreastScreen Aotearoa
BreastScreen Aotearoa is Aotearoa New Zealand’s national breast screening programme. It offers free mammograms every two years to eligible wāhine.
You can have free breast screening if you:
-
Are aged 45 to 69 years (with the age range being extended up to 74 years)
-
Have no breast symptoms
-
Are eligible for publicly funded health services in New Zealand
Breast screening can detect breast cancer early, often before you can see or feel any changes. Early detection greatly increases the chance of successful treatment.
Screening is done using a mammogram, which is an Xray of the breast. Services are provided at clinics and mobile screening units across the country.
If you notice any breast changes such as a lump, pain, or discharge, do not wait for a screening appointment. Please see your GP as soon as possible.
Cervical screening
National Cervical Screening Programme
Cervical screening looks for human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause changes that may lead to cervical cancer.
Since September 2023, HPV testing has been the main cervical screening test in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Cervical screening is recommended if you:
-
Are aged 25 to 69 years
-
Have a cervix (including transgender and non-binary people)
-
Have ever had any sexual contact
Screening is usually done every five years if HPV is not detected.
Many people can choose to take their own vaginal swab in a private, safe setting, or have the test done by a health professional. A speculum exam is often not needed unless HPV is detected and follow up is required.
Cervical screening is one of the best ways to prevent cervical cancer or find it early.
